Pellicle: In euglenoids (like Euglena), the cell wall is absent. Instead, the cell is covered by a protein-rich layer called the pellicle.

Flexibility: This layer is composed of thin, proteinaceous strips that lie underneath the plasma membrane. These strips can slide over one another, allowing the organism to change its shape and giving its body a high degree of flexibility.

Function: Besides providing flexibility, the pellicle supports the cell membrane and aids in a unique type of movement known as metaboly or "euglenoid movement".
